other stuff, repairs

Fixing stuff, or not

Christmas with my folks, turkey overdose… 4 new tyres were fitted prior to leaving London and we trundled up through heavy traffic without event mainly around 55mph. We’ve so far driven 300+ miles since picking him up, on his second tank of unleaded and managing around 26mpg if my calculations are to be believed (I don’t believe them so will check again…)

I have a list of things to sort, part way worked through and partially successful..

Propex heater won’t fire up..

Took it to bits.. we get a spark and sometimes an initial flare, but it won’t stay lit and I suspect it is because the fan won’t fire up – it works on the cold air setting… no obvious logical reason why it won’t work and I’m running out of time/patience for the moment..

So I put it back together again including cutting the grotty bits of  the outlet hose which fell off in this pic, and refitting it properly with the jubilee clips, and I will try to speak with Propex in the New Year..

I then checked out out the disfunctional stereo..

And spliced in a new aerial jack.. we now get FM radio with a bodged aerial (no idea where the bee sting aerial I ordered just before the break has got to…) so success of sorts. Only one speaker works and inspecting the driver’s side speaker revealed no quick easy fix so one will do for now..

Next up the sagging kids’ bunk panel. Dad’s garage yielded a bit of steel shelving system, a few screws later and it sags no more (for now)..

Located the gearbox dipstick (designed for checking by long armed continental types..) Oil is surprisingly clean and abundant so hopefully nothing required on that front for a bit anyway..

Currently trying to establish if the leisure battery anomalies are actually a problem or not. The relay mystery will be postponed until the New Year – hopefully we’ve enough juice in the leisure battery once fully charged to last us for the planned 4 nights in the lakes in the next days..

Ordered new second hand front Bosch spot lights to scavenge the glass to replace the broken lens to the near side one which is surprisingly still working despite being open to the elements. Hopefully they will arrive in London after we do in 2017…

Parts for the Vaillant boiler haven’t yet arrived, anyone would think it was Christmas or something… testing it again, it now sprays water everywhere when in use, so I’ve shut it off and drained it down again pending bits arriving.

We’ll be heading to the Lakes the day after tomorrow, like I said who needs heating or hot water…
